Dry Needling

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. It involves the insertion of thin needles into trigger points, which are hyperirritable spots in muscles, fascia, or connective tissue, to relieve pain and improve function.

What can be treated with dry needling?

Dry needling can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions and issues, including:

  • Muscle Pain and Tension: Dry needling is effective in relieving muscle tightness, spasms, and pain by targeting trigger points within the muscles.
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome: This condition involves the presence of trigger points in muscles and the surrounding fascia, leading to localized and referred pain. Dry needling can help alleviate these symptoms.
  • Chronic Pain Conditions: Dry needling may provide relief for chronic pain conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, and fibromyalgia by addressing muscle dysfunction and reducing pain sensitivity.
  • Joint Pain and Dysfunction: Dry needling can complement other physical therapy interventions in treating joint pain and dysfunction by addressing muscular imbalances and promoting better movement patterns.
  • Headaches and Migraines: Some headaches, including tension headaches and migraines, can be associated with muscle tension and trigger points. Dry needling may help reduce the frequency and intensity of these headaches.
  • Sports Injuries: Dry needling is commonly used in athletes to treat muscle strains, tendonitis, and other sports-related injuries, promoting faster recovery and return to activity.
  • Postural Dysfunction: By targeting muscles contributing to poor posture and alignment, dry needling can help correct imbalances and improve posture.
  • Nerve Pain: Dry needling may be used to alleviate nerve-related pain conditions such as sciatica or peripheral neuropathy by addressing associated muscle tightness and dysfunction.
  • Scar Tissue: Dry needling can help break down scar tissue and adhesions in muscles and connective tissue, improving mobility and reducing pain following surgery or injury.
